Forty-eight-year-old Ben Thompson is a librarian, a passionate book lover, and a man who embodies the definition of a bear. He’s also lonely after the loss of his long-term partner. Young ex-gymnast Jason Barnes piques his interest, but Ben quickly realizes there’s more to Jason than his good looks. While Jason visits the library almost every day, he never checks out a book.
With gentle persistence, Ben befriends Jason and learns the nineteen-year-old’s tragic secrets. After years of abuse at his father’s hands, Jason was kicked out of his family home for being gay. And despite his apparent love of books, Jason never learned to read. Ben offers to teach him, and the two men bond over their lessons. Ben can’t deny his attraction to Jason, but he wonders if Jason is too young and too handsome to return his interest. With the help of the close-knit library team and Jason’s growing self-confidence, they move beyond the books and into the bedroom, where their own story is just beginning.

Wonderfully written ! My first by this author.Burly, big "bear", Ben, 48, is a Librarian who had lost his partner of 20 years. Beautiful Jason, 19, survived a tragic, heart wrenching childhood. He's saved by his Nan, who he now takes care of. Jason goes to the library often and quite shy. Ben watches the lovely lad, and finds out Jason can't read, and devotes himself to helping. Other employees are drawn in and help, too. It's quite a nice family of friends.
Ben and Jason become close and the slow burn turns to love and hot sexiness. Ben's amazing feelings are awakened after so long, and he feels unworthy and too old for the young Jason, and vice versa; until they realize their love is really real and each man is worthy.
We get lessons on learning to read, on gardening, and we see the small community that truly appreciates it's Library.
We also learn how Nan gets her affairs in order with legal documents, etc., as it is explained after the event of the stroke.
We are lucky to watch these two men create their loving relationships and expand their world with added friends.
This is a lovely British tale of old/young, of opposites, plus it's a delightful sorting out of feelings, needs and acceptance.
Wonderfully written by T.J. Masters. I'll look for more by this terrific author.
ENJOY !

Bear Among the Books edition by TJ Masters Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Ben Thompson is 48 and as head librarian, is a passionate book lover and also embodies the definition of a bear. Jason Barnes is 19, living with his grandmother after being kicked out of his family home and loves books, going by the library almost every day, but never checks a book out. Ben befriends Jason and learns the young man has had a pretty rough and full life for someone so young and he, as well as the close knit library “family,” take Jason under their wing to give him another story.
The story is told from Ben’s point of view.
This is a very well-written story of a young man with a rough past – abuse, being kicked out and never feeling his worth and a second chance he gets starting with his grandmother taking him in, and then becoming part of the library family. It is also a second chance for Ben, who has been single for a few years after the death of his long-term partner. He is attracted to Jason immediately, but finds there is a very clever mind behind his good looks.
I really enjoyed these characters and the supporting characters of Daisy, Jake, Jess and Alice were so well-written, you really get a sense they are a real group of people who have connected and become a part of their community as well as creating this little extra family for themselves. While I enjoyed the story of the two main characters, the interaction with the supporting characters moved the story along as much as the time between the two men.
Despite Jason’s childhood – and readers should know there is reference to sexual and verbal abuse by his stepfather, as well as his subsequently being kicked out by his mother, he has a very big heart and wants to succeed in life, but is held back by an inability to read. One thing that is not really addressed is why he had such a tough time in school for reading when he is actually quite smart. Is it just the case of the system letting him down?
Ben has reservations of them being more than friends, of course, due to their age difference, and his concerns of any connection to Jason’s past. However, Jason is persistent in his pursuit and interest and eventually, the two attempt the waters, with the full support of the library family, who have come to care for Jason and they all love Ben and want to see him happy again! For the most part, this is a gentle love story of second chances, there is not a lot of angst and the only real drama is due to Alice, who is Jason’s grandmother, and her health, but for those looking for a romance with a happy ending, this will definitely do the trick, particularly if you like the older/younger man pairing.
Ben Thompson has been a bit lonely since the loss of his partner, but he's invested his passion into the library he manages. A lover of books, he enjoys being able to share them with his community. And he has a great team of staff to work with. When a new young man shows up at the library, piquing the interest of Ben's shrewd assistant, Ben finds himself more than curious. What's even more interesting is that the new patron spends hours in the library, but he never checks out a book.
Jason Barnes loves books. So he relishes his daily trips to the library, where he finds so many readily at this disposal. But there's something that makes Jason a unique library patron--he can't read. It's not something he's proud of, and he's found many ways to cope so most people don't even know. But when the head librarian shows him some kindness and manages to figure it out, Jason decides to let Ben give him some lessons. It's just that literacy skill isn't Jason's only secret. And as the two become fast friends--and maybe more--Jason wonders if Ben can handle Jason's past and who he's become as a result.
--
The obvious issue this book throws out from the beginning is age. Ben is forty-eight; Jason is nineteen. But the author doesn't dwell on it. It's addressed--some people would definitely have an issue with that age gap--but it's handled respectfully and with tact. And even if you might have an issue with that as a reader, I think you'd find that it's not as big of a deal in this book as it may seem.
Where things get more challenging is Jason's history of abuse and the issues of his illiteracy. It sounds like what Jason went through was pretty horrific, yet it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal in the end. And while I understand everyone works through their issues differently, it just seems odd to me that there's not as much worry or discussion on Ben's part as I would expect before they jump into any sort of a relationship. And while people can find many ways to hide that they can't read, there are moments when I wonder how Jason would have made it as far as he did in school without anyone noticing. Unless they did and didn't care. But the author doesn't really give us that, so it's hard to tell.
Slight issues aside, this is an interesting read. The supporting cast of characters is incredible. Daisy, the shrewd assistant, went from someone I didn't like to one of my favorite characters by the end. And Alice, Jason's grandmother, is a riot all her own. I suppose that helps balance out some of the heavy stuff Jason is going through.
This book is a total pleaser when it comes to being hungry for romance and happy endings. Thank you T.J.
The story was a little too sweet . With the kid's background happy ever after seems too easy to me.
